Srinagar – Two months after it was thrown open, Kashmir University Health Club which also houses a state of art gym remains a no go area for the students.
The much awaited facility, inaugurated by Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah in July this year is equipped with high end machinery worth about Rs 50 lac, sources said.
But unfortunately the centre which should have been benefiting students of the university was only helping improve health of higher administrative officials including Deans and Heads of the Departments Said Shakoor Ahmad of MERC Department.
Vice Chancellor on his first visit to the boys hostel promised a free gym. But now after 2 months of its inauguration we are still not allowed to workout there. I went there so many times but every time the door was shut on me, lamented Iqbal Hussain of Law Department.
Employees both teaching as well as non teaching can afford going to a gym outside but an average student is supposed to get these benefits from the University, he said.
The gym was originally meant for the students of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, but authorities had promised that the facility would be open to all students.
Gym coach, Sheikh Adil admitted that the students were not allowed in the gym yet. We want the students to work out in the gym. I have sent a proposal to the higher authorities in this regard. We will be charging them a very low sum as nominal fee, Adil told Kashmir Observer.
Whenever our students go for inter-state championships, they are not able to compete with their counterparts from other states due to the lack of physical fitness, said Adil.
As per sources currently the centre has only 20 registered members almost all of them staff members.
Director Physical Education Department, University of Kashmir was not available for comment. His secretary said, Director Sahab was away in Delhi
