SRINAGAR: Panic gripped Kakapora in Pulwama district when unidentified gunmen appeared near Sumo Stand Kakapora and attacked police personnel deployed there causing injury to a policeman.
Reports said that at around 5 in the evening, unidentified gunmen appeared near Sumo Stand and attacked the government forces who were on a routine patrol.
Gunmen fired upon the police indiscriminately that created panic in the area. Shopkeepers downed their shutters while transport came to stand still.
Eyewitnesses said that government forces retaliated and there was brief exchange of fire. Reports said that soon after the attack the unidentified gunmen managed to escape from the spot while government forces cordoned off the whole area and started searches.
A police official later said that one Indian Reserve Police jawan was injured in the attack. He was immediately shifted to District Hospital Pulwama where from he was rushed to SKIMS..
The injured policeman has been identified as Javid Ahmed Bhat son of Bashir Ahmed Bhat (596) resident of Gool Gulabgarh.
Officials said that the heavy deployment of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) men was made in Kakpora today ahead of PDP President Mehbooba Muftis visit to the area.
Meanwhile, KNS said the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen in a telephonic statement has claimed responsibility for the Pulwama attack.
Army Patrol Fired Upon in Palhalan
Army Saturday said that a suspected militant attacked its patroll party near New Colony Palhalan in Pattan.
Our patrol party personnel from 29 RR came under attack when a suspected militant fired upon them with AK-47 riffle. We exercised maximum restraint and did not retaliate, an army official said.
Reports said that soon after the incident police, army and Special Operation Group personnel cordoned off the area and with the help of sniffer dogs recovered some arms and ammunition from a band saw mill.
A police official while confirming the incident said that before fleeing from the spot militant had left one AK-47 riffle, one magazine and 9 rounds near a band saw mill which were recovered by the joint search party.
We have registered a case vide FIR number 46/2014 under section 7/27 arms act in this regard and investigation is going on, the police official said.
