Food cooked in this canteen was most unhygienic: Health Officer
SRINAGAR: The Municipal Magistrate Srinagar on Saturday sealed the canteen of G B Pant Childrens Hospital which was operating from the lavatory block of the hospital complex and selling unhygienic food to attendants.
SMC Magistrate Khursheed-ul-Islam along with the Health Officer Dr Shafqat Khan during their inspection of the canteen found food prepared there in rusted pots and prohibited colours unfit for human consumption, SMC officials said.
Even animals could not be fed in those utensils. The gullible people from peripheries were being cheated, said Dr Khan.
According to reports scores of attendants in GB Panth Hospital had complained against the owner of the canteen one Mansoor Ahmed Naikoo son of Ghulam Muhammad resident of Poshama Shopian that he was supplying unhygienic food to them on exorbitant rates.
Medical Superintendent of the hospital was called on spot who said that the person who has been running the canteen was allotted the canteen by the cantonment board.
Sources said that despite repeated requests made by the hospital administration the canteen owner ignored their concern saying that he was under the territorial and administrative jurisdiction of the cantonment board.
And also he was paying the rent to the cantonment board and not to the hospital. He had got rent agreement and the authority letter from the cantonment board. Thereby the hospital administration was not allowed to interfere into the canteen functioning. Citing similar arrangement between the medical shops in and around the hospital and the cantonment board, where the hospital administration is not allowed to interfere, sources added.
The MS G.B Pant hospital said that the canteen owner had converted the newly constructed toilet block into canteen and has encroached upon the road as he is affiliated with some political party. The hospital administration has already taken the matter with the CM but without any favourable action.
He however failed to give a convincing answer why he did not inform SMC.
SMC officials visited hospital on the frequent complaints of the attendants
Who visit it from far flung areas.
SMC finally sealed the canteen and filed challan against the canteen owner and the chief executive officer of the cantonment board.
