Srinagar: Doctors at Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) recently operated upon a 26 year old male of Qamarwari, Srinagar, with accidental Post Electric Burn Deformity of Hand.
Patients Post burn contracture was released with a flap cover in first stage in the same hospital some time back. The patient had a moderate sized segmental defect of both nerves (Ulnar and Median nerves) of the hand which were reconstructed by harvesting of Sural Nerve, (a donor nerve from his own leg) approximately 30 cms. Multiple cables of his Sural Nerve were fashioned which were micro surgically anastomosed with the freshened ends of the nerves of his hand. This complex plastic surgical procedure was performed for about 5 hours by a team of plastic surgeons of the Health Department namely Dr Tahir Saleem Khan and Dr Sheikh Tariq along with Sarabjeet Singh and Imtiyaz Ahmed with full support from the department of Anesthesia headed by Dr Arifa. The whole procedure was supervised by Dr Mohammad Iqbal, Medical Superintendent Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Hospital.
It is pertinent to mention here that Plastic surgical procedures viz. correction of post burn deformities, cleft lip,hypospadias, vascular anomalies, scars revisions post traumatic and post burn wounds, skin cancers etc. are routinely performed by the above mentioned team at the hospital.
Director Health Services, Kashmir Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman has complimented the Medical Superintendent JLNM Hospital and the operative team for attaining this landmark feat and has assured for better logistics so that such procedures can be done with ease at peripheral hospitals where already skilled and experienced doctors are at place so that patients at large gets benefited at their door steps and simultaneously will lesser down the burden of already burdened tertiary hospitals.
