Srinagar: An elderly man died of cardiac arrest in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday during a clash triggered by the land acquisition drive by the district authorities.
Some residents of Hermain village, including women resorted to stone pelting when a team of officials led by Tehsildar Hermain, Block Development Officer (BDO) reached the village on Tuesday to take possession of a piece of land that was supposed to be converted into a sports ground, news agency KNT reported quoted witnesses.
Due to the stone pelting, an elderly man suffered cardiac arrest and died on the spot. The report identified him as 75 year old Abdul Salam Thokar, a resident of Padderpora Shopian.
An official feigned ignorance about the incident, however, he confirmed that locals expressed resentment when authorities had gone to the village to possess the land for a sports ground.
