I am a stammerer.
The guest column, “Accept Stammering” by Amit Singh Kushwaha, published on Kashmir Observer to mark the International Stammering Awareness day, evoked both cold hard facts and compassion. It is time that the stammers in the world be treated with nothing more than the same dignity and respect offered to other citizens. The author rightly pointed, “The need of the hour is that people should accept stammering as human diversity and accept it extensively”.
One thing I myself would have added to the column was that the movie industry – both Hollywood and Bollywood – over the last 75 years have not treated stammers well because of the roles that portray them with negativity and mockery. The author of the article had rightly pointed that, “Stammers are isolated and many times judged incapable of jobs and marriage.”
I do wish to mention a great source of help that is used by stammerers the world over. There is much help and free resources offered by the website of the non-profit organisation Stuttering Foundation (www.stammeringhelp.org) with things like downloadable books and streaming videos and a lot of other helpful info.
