Srinagar: The heavy snowfall which disrupted life all across Kashmir while the arterial Srinagar-Jammu Highway was closed for the three days, the prices of essential commodities like, fresh vegetables, milk, chicken and mutton have risen sharply.
The prices of chicken and mutton have increased by 25 to 30 per cent while auto rickshaw drivers have doubled the charges from passengers in Srinagar city and other major towns as more people avail the facility due to water logged roads.
I prefer to travel by auto these days because there is water logging at different places. Taking due advantage of water logging, the rickshaw drivers are charging exorbitantly, said Muhammad Abbas of Alamgari Bazar.
Another resident from Raj Bagh Srinagar said that he purchased chicken at Rs 130 a kg while mutton is being sold at Rs 370 a kg against the government price of Rs 310, he said.
People are complaining that vegetable and mutton sellers are charging the prices at their will while no market checking is being conducted by Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department.
When contacted Director CA&PD, Bashir Ahmed Khan said that there is no shortage of essential commodities in the market and market checking is being conducted on routine basis. Our checking squad charged a fine of Rs 14,000 from different shopkeepers from Rainawari and other parts of old city. He appealed people to pay only Rs 100 for on kg chicken and Rs 310 for one kg meat.
