Srinagar: Suspected militants on Thursday shot dead three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, including party’s youth wing General Secretary in Qazigund area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Around 8:15pm on Thursday, suspected militants opened fire upon three BJP workers, including party’s Yuva Morcha General Secretary for Kulgam Fida Hussain Yatoo and his associates Umer Rashid Beigh and Umer Ramzan Hajam near Eidgah Y K Pora, officials said. The trio, they said were critically injured in the militant attack and were removed to the emergency hospital Qazigund for treatment.
However, before the doctors could operate upon them, all the three BJP members succumbed to gunshot wounds.
“All three of them were brought dead,” Dr Asima Medical Superintendent Qazigund told news agency GNS.
Soon after the attack, state forces in large numbers reached the area and started a search operation to nab the assailants.
“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this,”
According to news agency PTI, The Resistance Front (TRF), which is believed to be a shadow group of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the killings.
In a message in English and Hindi on its social media account, the TRF said “crematoriums will get overbooked”, PTI reported.
Militants have since June stepped up attacks on BJP workers and leaders, killing eight of them so far.
