Srinagar- Two Jaish-e-Muhammad militants were killed by state forces in an encounter that broke out on Tuesday night in Mouchwa area of Budgam district of central Kashmir, police said Wednesday.
The site of the encounter is close to the capital Srinagar.
State forces launched a cordon-and-search operation at Mouchwa in Chadoora area of Budgam around 7 pm on Tuesday following information about the presence of militants there, a police spokesperson said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter around 9 pm after militants opened fire at state forces positions.
Two militants were killed in the encounter which lasted nearly four hours, the police spokesperson said, adding due to darkness the operation was suspended, however the whole area was put under strict cordon.
“In the wee hours, search operation was resumed and bodies of both the killed militants were retrieved from the site of encounter,” the police spokesperson said.
He identified them as Javaid Ahmad Ganie resident of Pulwama and Khalid alias Ilyas, a Pakistani national, both associated with JeM.
“Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes,” the police spokesperson said.
He further said that the bodies shall be sent to Handwara for burial after completion of all medico-legal formalities and the nearest family members of the local militant shall be allowed to participate in the last rites at Handwara.
“In this connection a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
