Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference led by incarcerated chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Thursday expressed concern over the plight of prisoners in Jammu and Kashmir jails and outside and demanded their immediate release.
In a statement issued here, a Hurriyat spokesperson said that thousands of Kashmiris, including Hurriyat leaders and activists, lawyers, journalists and young boys are languishing in Tihar, Agra, Kotbalwal, Jodhpur, Amphalla, Haryana and other jails on fictitious charge and they were neither being tried in courts nor any legal proceedings have been initiated.
The Hurriyat spokesperson alleged that the arbitrary detention of the prisoners was just being prolonged and many of them have been detained even after serving their sentences.
“The mental and physical condition of many among the prisoners is a matter of concern, while the fear of contracting the Covid 19 virus in cramped up spaces of jail is a constant fear among the prisoners and their families,” the Hurriyat spokesperson said.
He added that all political prisoners, including Mirwaiz, who is under house arrest since August last year, should be released.
The separatist conglomerate also urged the human rights groups, civil society member’s legal fraternity both in India and outside to raise its voice against these “targeted detentions”
“The atmosphere of fear intimidation unaccountability and uncertainty pervades every sphere of life in J&K to silence dissent and demands. In such a situation one has to be patient but not lose hope,” the Hurriyat spokesperson said, adding “APHC stands firm on its principles and rights of the people of J&K,”
The Hurriyat spokesperson also expressed displeasure that the conglomerate’s statements were not being carried by the newspapers.
