SRINAGAR: Sufiana maestro and instrumentalist, Ustad Ghulam Mohammad Saaznawaz passed away Thursday afternoon in Srinagar. A recipient of Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Saaznawaz was considered an exceptional musical talent of the state.
Son of sufiyana maestro Ustad Ramzan Joo, Saaznawaz was born in 1940 in Safakadal Srinagar in a family of Sufiana musicians.
Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages, Khalid Bashir Ahmed expressed profound grief and sorrow on the demise of Saaznawaz.
Bashir said the demise of the maestro was a great loss to music in general and Kashmiri sufiana music in particular. He said the late instrumentalist had popularized Kashmir music in a major way and his contribution would be remembered for a long time.
The Secretary recalled Saaznawazs association with the academy and said he had been a member of the academys general council. He belonged to the famous Saaznawaz Gharana of Kashmir which has a long and rich tradition in sufiana music. His contribution was acknowledged at a highest level through Sangeet Natak Academy Award and the State Award.
