Srinagar, Sept 23: With the inflated claims of infiltration into Kashmir, especially in Uri sector being contested by the Jammu and Kashmir police, the army is understood to be working out a mechanism to ensure authenticity of the information it puts out from New Delhi.
Quoting well placed sources in the Home department here, a PTI report said on Sunday that the figures of some 100 infiltrators having sneaked into the Kashmir valley this year were highly exaggerated.
Soon after the conference of directors-general of police in New Delhi early this month, the state police and home department had sought clarification about the number of infiltrators who might have crossed over to this side of the Line of Control, sources said, adding the inputs from the director-general of Military Intelligence and Defense Intelligence Agency claiming 24 militants had cross over in the Uri sector in July could not be substantiated either by the local army unit or by the state police, they said.
Even after an extensive search in nearby areas extending up to Hafruda forests in the frontier district of Kupwara, during which unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) too had been called out there had been no trace of the infiltrators.
The lack of veracity in the military intelligence inputs had triggered a series of meetings between the local army commanders, the Intelligence Bureau, the state police and other security agencies, prompting a senior police official to comment in one of the meetings that either the militants had vanished into thin air or that ghosts only had crossed the LoC, sources said, adding it was decided in principle to work out a mechanism for more authentic information.
The north Kashmir town of Sopore, at one time considered to be a hotbed of militants, has been screened thoroughly by the state police and security agencies but no major activity has come to notice, the sources said.
The Union Home Ministry is understood to have told the defense authorities to take into account the inputs provided by the state police and local intelligence agencies before arriving at any authentic figure of infiltration.
The figures put out are generally based on technical intercepts provided by the defense intelligence in New Delhi, the sources said. (Agencies)
