NEW DELHI: The crisis in the ruling coalition over the issue of new administrative issues may have been averted, but chief minister Omar Abdullah still has his fingers crossed giving rise to speculation that the issue may take any twist on Feb when the Cabinet Sub Committee is to submit its report to cabinet.
Taking to a national news agency Abdullah hinted that the crisis was far from over, so far.
“I cannot say whether the crisis has been averted,” Abdullah was quoted by the newswire.
“Any decision will be taken on February 1 when the state cabinet meets,”
The issue of new administrative units snowballed into a major confrontation between collation partners, National Conference and Congress, with Omar Abdullah threatening to resign. It was only after the intervention of Congress High Command that the local congress unit promised to cooperate on the issue.
Deputy Prime Minister Tara Chand who heads the Cabinet Sub Committee on new administrative units said Wednesday that it will submit the report to cabinet on Feb 1.
National Conference is pressing for creation of 700 new administrative units for better governance, a move the Congress was earlier resisting, but now reports say, the Congress favours creation of as many as 2,100 such units on grounds of a “more equitable distribution” among various regions.
On Wednesday Abdullahs father and NC patron Farooq Abdullah told newsmen that the final call would be taken by the chief minister.
