Jammu- The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday witnessed a heated discussion after National Conference (NC) MLA Aijaz Jan expressed concerns over the exclusion of deserving families from the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) lists under the public distribution system (PDS).
Speaking in the House, Jan said many families who should be eligible for these schemes were being moved to the Above Poverty Line (APL) category, making them ineligible for key benefits.
“What should I tell people who approach me daily with these concerns? Those who genuinely qualify for AAY and BPL benefits are finding themselves categorized as APL,” Jan said, urging the government to review the process.
In response to a query, the government stated that it does not maintain manual updation lists of beneficiaries, claiming that all changes are captured on the RCMS portal (rcms.jk.gov.in), which is available in the public domain.
Jan questioned whether the current system was serving the people’s expectations. His remarks prompted support from senior opposition leader Mir Saifullah and other MLAs, who also sought greater transparency in the process.
In response, the concerned minister assured the House that a verification process would be initiated, and details would be shared with the legislators.
Despite the assurance, several MLAs continued to press for a thorough review of the system, emphasizing the need for accountability in welfare programs aimed at marginalized communities.
