Srinagar- Jammu and Kashmir witnessed continuous rain and snowfall for the third consecutive day, with the Meteorological Department predicting more precipitation over the next 24 hours.
Upper reaches of Kashmir including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Peer Ki Gali, Zojila Pass, and Sadhna Top received fresh snowfall, while intermittent rains lashed the plains, including Srinagar, on Friday.
The MeT department issued a yellow alert for Saturday, warning of intermittent light to moderate rain in most areas and snowfall in the higher reaches.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MeT Department, stated that a brief spell of light rain and snow is expected at a few places in the morning, with weather conditions improving by the afternoon. He further predicted generally dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir from March 17 to 24.
Independent weather forecaster Aadil Maqbool also anticipated moderate to heavy rainfall in the region over the next 24 hours. “Good rainfall activity is expected across Kashmir, with snowfall over higher reaches, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Yousmarg, and some middle reaches of Shopian, Kulgam, and Kupwara,” Maqbool said. He added that weather conditions are likely to improve by the night of March 16 or early March 17.
Meanwhile, the MeT department issued an advisory urging travelers, tourists, and transporters to adhere to administration and traffic guidelines. Farmers have been advised to suspend agricultural activities until March 16. The advisory also warned people against visiting avalanche-prone areas, highlighting the risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at vulnerable locations.
The fresh spell of snowfall and rain has also led to a rise in water levels across the Valley’s water bodies. At 6:00 PM, the water level in the Jhelum River was recorded at 1.38 ft at Sangam and 3.86 ft at Ram Munshi Bagh. Other streams and rivers, including Vaishow Nallah and Wular, were also flowing above zero level.
