Srinagar- The indefinite hunger strike by faculty members of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Rajouri over the suspension of an assistant professor of the Varsity entered its third consecutive day on Tuesday.
Dr. Parvez Abdullah, Assistant Professor in the Department of Management Studies and president of the university’s Teachers Association was suspended on February 21 without being served a mandatory show-cause notice. He was subsequently attached to Kishtwar Nursing College.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday demanded an explanation for the suspension of Dr Parvez Abdullah.
“The suspension of Dr. Parvez Abdullah from Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has escalated into a major issue with both teaching & non-teaching staff going on an indefinite strike in his support. This has become a pressing concern as it is significantly impacting the academic environment and the overall educational system at the university,” Mehbooba wrote on X.
She further said that “many conspiracy theories are making rounds which threaten the very existence of this precious university . The administration must clarify the reasons behind his suspension and make them public. Transparency and accountability are crucial to understand why such action was taken against the assistant professor.”
Meanwhile, BGSBU Vice Chancellor Prof. Jawaid Iqbal defended the suspension, stating that due process was followed and the action was based on multiple complaints filed against Dr. Abdullah back in 2021.
Prof. Iqbal emphasized that the suspension was not arbitrary but was necessitated by non-compliance with institutional norms. He assured that a fair inquiry is underway, and the concerned individual will be given an opportunity to present their case once the process is completed.
