Srinagar- The holy month of Ramazan will commence in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, March 2, as the crescent moon was not sighted on Friday night.
Grand Mufti, Nasir-ul-Islam Friday said that the crescent moon has not been sighted, thus, the first day of Ramazan will be on Sunday (March 02).
The Grand Mufti said that no witnesses or evidence were received from anywhere about the sighting of Ramadan moon today. “Therefore, the first day of fasting will be on Sunday,” he said.
Meanwhile, as the Valley prepares for the sacred month, fruit and vegetable markets in Kashmir are already stocked with fresh arrivals, ensuring a smooth supply for the holy month.
Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Association (KVFGDU) Chairman Bashir Ahmad Basheer on Thursday said the Valley has sufficient stock to meet the growing demand.
“Every day, around 5,000 to 6,000 fruit boxes reach Kashmir, with 400-500 boxes per vehicle. As temperatures rise, the demand for fruits like watermelons and melons, especially during Ramazan, will increase, and supply from outside will also go up,” Basheer said.
He said vegetables are also available in good quantities, and prices will remain stable. “Even if the weather plays spoilsport and the highway gets blocked, we have enough stock to keep the markets running,” he added.
