Located at Srinagar’s old city, one hundred -year-old color smith or “Rangrez” is one of the last remaining hand-dyers unit in Kashmir who continue to manually dye silk yarn and woolen threads used in knitting and weaving shawls, carpets and other items that make Kashmir famous for its handicraft. Most of the aged workers in these units say, the younger generation is not interested in hand-dyeing as costs have gone up and who will come to work in dyeing units for small amount of money when workers can earn Rs 800 by working as labour in factories.
