In recent times, digital technology and social media have been both a boon and a bane for Kashmiris. On one hand, they offer connectivity and access to unparalleled resources, but on the other, they provide a platform for professional scammers to exploit innocent people. These scammers often present themselves as reputed investment firms or consultancies offering lucrative opportunities, but their sole aim is to swindle unsuspecting victims. These fraudsters are particularly active on social media platforms like Facebook, posting deceptive advertisements that promise incredible returns on investments or consultancy services for immigration. They rarely provide personal contact numbers. Instead, they prefer to communicate via WhatsApp, using numbers that are hard to trace back to them. Often, they have elaborate websites showcasing their ‘services,’ but typically, these do not include any genuine contact information like phone numbers, office addresses, or verifiable credentials. Kashmiri residents are especially targeted because of their eagerness to find new opportunities for investment and growth. Many are lured by the prospects of high returns or the promise of moving abroad. The scammers seem trustworthy, with their polished websites and convincing communication skills. They might even claim to be linked to prestigious international companies or agencies. However, once they’ve gained a victim’s trust and extracted initial deposits or ‘consultation’ fees, these scammers disappear. Calls go unanswered, and WhatsApp numbers become inactive. To safeguard yourself from such fraudulent schemes, it’s essential to exercise caution. Never trust online advertisements blindly. Always verify the credibility of the company or individual before engaging in any financial transactions. Ensure that contact details, including landline numbers, are legitimate. It is wise to consult local professionals you trust or seek recommendations from people who have previously engaged with reputable services. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stay informed, be cautious, and always trust your instincts in these matters. Protect yourself and your hard-earned money by staying one step ahead of the scammers. Sharing this information can help your community stay vigilant against such malicious activities.
