Srinagar- Department of Wildlife Protection Wetland Division conducted raids in Srinagar on Tuesday after some individuals were found allegedly involved in illegal poaching activities at Wular Lake.
The illegal poaching activities came to display through the videos surfaced on social media, which depicted people carrying firearms and suggesting wildlife hunting, prompted swift action from the authorities.
In a statement the department said, “The Department of Wildlife Protection Wetland Division has initiated a series of raids in the Srinagar area in response to social media videos showing individuals allegedly involved in illegal poaching activities at Wular Lake. The videos depicted individuals carrying firearms, suggesting involvement in wildlife hunting, prompting swift action from the authorities.”
In the early hours of December 10, the department conducted coordinated raids at multiple locations, aiming to apprehend those involved. While further details are awaited, preliminary reports suggest that the operation could lead to the confiscation of firearms and potential arrests of suspects, it said.
It further said the decisive action underscores the department’s commitment to safeguarding wildlife and addressing illegal activities threatening protected areas. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
