Srinagar- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday announced the restoration of academic sessions up to 9th standard to November-December instead of March session.
Omar, alongwith Education Minister Sakina Itoo, in a video message, said, “For a long time especially from the winter zones of Jammu and Kashmir divisions, the parents as well as students were demanding to restore the schedule of exams to November-December session instead of March.”
The Chief Minister said that today the education minister brought the proposal to cabinet to revert the academic session to November-December and the cabinet has accepted it. “Now, the schedule of the exams for all classes upto 9th standard will be held before the winter vacations,” he said.
Omar added, “However, in case of the students of 10th to 12th classes, we cannot restore the academic session this year but in the 2025, we will revert the schedule as per the old scheme and their exams will also be held before winter vacations.”
Earlier, J&K’s education minister Sakina Itoo said that the academic session has been restored to November-December up to 9th standard.
“For now, we will restore the academic session back to November-December up to 9th standard. For students of 10th to 12th, academic sessions will be restored from next year,” she said.
In the meantime, Itoo on her microblogging site X said, “We are announcing a change of academic session back to November-December from this year for non-board classes i.e., upto class 9th, for Kashmir Province and Winter zones of Jammu Province. For higher classes, sessions would be restored from next year. I thank Hon’ble CM Jb @OmarAbdullah Sb for the prompt decision on the matter which was concerning students, teachers and parents.”
CM Omar Abdullah assured students and parents that from next year, a similar winter-aligned schedule will be implemented for higher classes, allowing board exams to conclude ahead of the harsh winter.
“This shift will provide relief to our children and their parents,” added CM Abdullah, expressing his appreciation for Sakina Itoo’s dedication to the initiative.
People’s Conference Chairman, Sajad Gani Lone welcomed the decision to revert the academic session for students up to class 9 to end-of-year examinations in November, describing it as the correction of a previous wrong decision.
Taking to the microblogging site X, formerly known as Twitter, Lone said, “Good that a wrong decision has been reversed. Welcome reverting the academic session up to class 9 back to end-of-year exams in November. This should be extended to classes 10, 11, and 12, where it matters most.”
Lone highlighted that while this adjustment is positive, it is essential for the change to be applied to higher classes, particularly for students in classes 10, 11, and 12, where the academic schedule significantly impacts students’ preparation and performance.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration led by Lieutenant Governor in 2022 had issued orders for the implementation of a “ uniform academic Calendar” for both Jammu and Kashmir divisions “ in sync with the higher education department and the rest of the country.”
