Srinagar- In a gesture reminiscent of the spirit of sacrifice observed during Muharram, a group of youth from Srinagar is bearing scorching temperatures to distribute juice and water to the public at different locations in the city.
They say the initiative is to evoke poignant memories of the historic tribulations faced in Karbala
Pertinently, Imam Hussain was martyred alongside 72 of his companions, in the battle of Karbala in 680 CE against the army of the Umayyad caliph Yazid Ibn Muawiya.
The volunteers say that they are inspired by the teachings of Imam Hussain (A.S) and started distributing water and juices to passersby in the city’s different localities.
On 1st Muharram 1446 A.H they began their journey at Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta, and on 2nd Muharram they distributed refreshments among passersby at the Sir Syed Gate of University of Kashmir, Hazratbal.
On 3rd and 4th Muharram they set up refreshments in the bustling heart of Lal Chowk at Exchange road.
Speaking to Kashmir Observer, Syed Zeeshan, one of the organizers, spoke about the group’s motivation, saying, “We aim to perpetuate the message of Karbala amidst changing times. While our methods may evolve, the essence remains constant, choosing death with dignity over a life tainted by dishonor.”
Zeeshan said that over the period of time our languages and ways of conveying messages have changed but Imam Hussain’s message of brotherhood and equality is Universal and remains unchanged.
Another volunteer, Syed Mehdi, highlighted the broader implications of their endeavor, drawing parallels between the martyrs of Karbala and contemporary struggles of the Palestinian people.
“The martyrs of Karbala epitomized truth, honor, and justice. Today, the plight of Palestinians resonates with these ideals,” he said.
Mehdi further said that the initiative aims to not only provide physical relief but also serves as a reminder of the enduring relevance of Imam Hussain’s principles of sacrifice and compassion.
The volunteers also said that in view of the Israeli war on Gaza, they are boycotting Israeli companies and distributing water and juices from local brands.
