Srinagar- The Apni Party’s protest against inflated monthly electricity bills and the proposed installation of smart water meters in a phased manner in Kashmir was thwarted by the police in Srinagar on Wednesday.
The protest rally was led by senior party leader Muntazir Mohi-ud-din from the party’s Srinagar headquarters located in the Sheikh Bagh area of Lal Chowk.
Chanting slogans like “LG administration wake up and do away with anti-people policies, the protesting Apni Party workers when attempted to march towards Lal Chowk, were intercepted by the police deployed in advance, leading to their peaceful dispersal.
They threatened to step up their protest in case the government does not revoke its recent decision of installing smart water meters in the region.
By forcing its unilateral decisions upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir, they claimed, the LG government has miserably failed in earning their trust.
However, before the Apni Party workers could march towards Lal Chowk to register their protest, a pose of J&K police deployed in advance sprung into action, forcing them to disperse.
“Apni Party will not allow the people of Kashmir to continue being victims. They were stunned by the governments’ recent decision to install smart water meters, adding to the already unpleasant experience caused by increased power tariffs,” Muntazir Mohi-ud-Din told reporters.
He said the Apni Party is committed to helping economically disadvantaged people of Kashmir and that the party would keep up its fight till the government reverses its anti-people decisions.
