Srinagar- The much-anticipated Dalgate Bridge which connects Boulevard Road with the old city was officially thrown open to the public on Thursday, officials said.
The construction of the bridge, which according to the officials was demolished a few years ago, considering safety concerns of the general public, was built earlier than expected.
People living in the vicinity expressed their gratitude to the authorities for fulfilling their long pending demand, saying the regular traffic bottlenecks in the area had made their lives difficult.
“We express our gratitude to the administration for finishing the bridge’s construction ahead of schedule. Over the years, the construction work continued for several years. We may now breathe a sigh of relief that it is finished,” locals told Kashmir Observer.
Macadamization of the bridge was completed a day earlier and the traffic on the bridge began to flow this morning, according to officials of the Roads and Buildings Department (R&B).
Over the years, residents and commuters frequently voiced their dissatisfaction with the sluggish pace of construction on this vital link. However, the mood was markedly different today.
Speaking to Kashmir Observer, the chief engineer R&B department, Sajad Naqeeb said that he personally oversaw the work and had directed AEE concerned to speed up construction.
“Dalgate Bridge was finally opened to the public, and we hope other under construction bridges in Srinagar, including Noorbagh-Qamarwari Bridge, will be completed by August end or early September this year,” Naqeeb added.
