Pulwama- The Public Darbar initiative, recently resumed by Director General of Police (DGP) R R Swain, is garnering widespread praise from the public for providing a direct platform to address their grievances and engage with law enforcement.
The resumption of this programme has been lauded for promoting transparency, community involvement and strengthening the relationship between the police and the public.
On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered at District Police Lines (DPL) Pulwama to present their issues to the DGP and seek resolutions.
Approximately 300 applications were received during the Darbar. The DGP gave on-the-spot directions in many cases and assured attendees that pending cases would be addressed as soon as possible.
An elderly man from Pulwama shared his ordeal, saying his son was killed by terrorists years ago, and he has been seeking employment for his other son under the Special Relief Operation (SRO) for the past two years. “I have been moving from pillar to post, seeking employment for my son under SRO,” he said.
After meeting the police chief, he expressed hope that his issue would soon be resolved. “The DGP Sahab assured me that my son would get a job,” he added.
A woman expressed her concern about her husband being posted outside Kashmir while their child is ill. She requested her husband’s transfer back to Kashmir for better care of their child. “DGP Sahab assured me that justice will be done. I’m hopeful that my husband will be transferred soon to Kashmir,” she said.
Many attendees raised issues including requests for re-investigations of their cases, citing improper investigations in the past. “DGP directed the concerned authorities to look into the matter and re-investigate the cases wherever required,” they said.
The attendees strongly advocated for similar Public Darbars to be held in every district. They said these redressal programmes are crucial for the timely resolution of issues, especially for the less privileged.
Holding such Darbars in every district at least twice every six months would significantly strengthen the bond between the police and the public, the attendees said.
