Srinagar- Police have arrested a man on the charges of domestic violence for brutally assaulting and injuring his wife at Harwan area of the city last evening.
The accused, police said, was arrested following a complaint by the victim at the concerned police station under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.
Police said the victim suffered severe injuries after being struck on the back of her neck by her husband at her matrimonial home at Chandpora, Harwan last evening.
Identified as Tasneem Ruhi, wife of Lateef Ahmad Badyari, police said, the victim was immediately taken to Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura by the police for treatment and to fulfill some necessary medico-legal formalities.
A formal case FIR no 29 of 2024 under section 498-A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at police station Harwan in this regard and investigation set into motion.
A senior police official informed Kashmir Observer that the accused was taken into custody the same day the crime happened. He said an FIR was lodged after the victim recorded her statement before the officer investigating the instant case.
“The differences between the couple persisted till date despite written assurances by the accused that he would never subject his wife to physical or mental abuse at her matrimonial home,” a family member of the victim, told Kashmir Observer.
“She is traumatized after a fresh assault by her husband. We received a call from her daughter last evening that her mother is seriously injured and is lying in a pool of blood. She asked me to immediately take her to the hospital,” said the family.
After lodging an FIR at the concerned police station, the victim, they said, was taken to SKIMS Soura by a police team for treatment.
“He went beyond all bounds, leaving no option for us but to call the police. Due to severe neck injuries, our daughter is unable to talk. We urge the police to bring severe charges against the accused who turned our daughter’s life into a nightmare,” the family added.
