Srinagar- To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini, founder of the Islamic revolution of Iran, a number of functions were held in Kashmir and Ladakh.
Majlis Ulama-e-Jammu Kashmir organized an educational conference with the theme “Imam Khomeini the torch bearer of humanity” at Gund Hasi Bhat Lawaypora, in the city outskirts.
The conference commenced with the recitation of Holy Quran by Qari Aijaz Hussain Sofi followed by sermons by scholars. Maulana Amjad Hussain, Maulana Muzaffar Hussain, Maulana Hakim Sajad, Maulana Nazir Ahmad and Maulana Sheikh Ghulam Rasool Noori spoke on the occasion.
Speakers described Imam Khomeini as the charismatic leader of the century who abolished monarchy and established an Islamic system of government despite the opposition of imperialist powers.
“The purpose of the Iranian Revolution and Imam Khomeini was divine, the values of humanity were upheld by the late Imam and the revolution was brought by a popular uprising,” said Maulana Ghulam Rasool.
Mourning ceremonies were also held at different places across Kashmir including Mir Behri Dal, Zadibal, Odina Sonawari, Zainageer Sopore to pay tributes to the late founder of the Islamic Republic.
“Imam Khomeini is a popular figure in this part of the world. Every year his anniversary is commemorated and mourned as a way of paying respect to him,” Imran Renu, who attended a Majlis at Mir Behri Dal, said.
The anniversary was also commemorated in Ladakh. In district Kargil, Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust, paid rich tributes to Imam Khomeini at Hussaini Park.
Speakers said the revolution led by Imam Khomeini was not just a change of government but it was a revolution of values and Imam Khomeini brought morality and ethics into politics and redefined politics forever.
On the occasion, the participants also voiced their support to the Palestinians who are battling the Israeli war on Gaza and chanted pro-Palestine slogans.
