Srinagar- A 75 year-old man lost his life after allegedly being run over by a police armored vehicle in Hawal area of the city here Friday afternoon.
The incident sparked protests in the area, with demonstrators demanding legal action against the driver they accused of negligent driving.”
The deceased, whom they identified as Abdul Salam, a native of Hawal, was crossing the road, when an armored vehicle of Jammu and Kashmir police struck him near Firdous Cinema, leaving him critically injured.
No sooner had the incident taken place; the injured was removed to Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) by the police, where doctors declared him as brought dead.
The video showing an elderly man lying in a pool of blood on the road went viral on social media sites, evoking condemnation from netizens.
The agitated locals blocked the main road for about an hour that severely affected the traffic movement in the area. The protestors alleged the elderly man was struck twice by the vehicle, causing fatal injuries
“This was the result of the driver’s careless driving; the tragedy could have been avoided had he noticed the elderly man moving to the other side of the road,” police officers, who had arrived on the scene following the incident, were informed by the protesters.
The officers, however, assured the protesters that the driver will be taken to task in case he was found to be involved in reckless driving, which allegedly claimed the life of an elderly man.
“We promise to take legal action against the driver if it is found that he was operating the vehicle negligently. We will review the CCTV footage to confirm this,” the officers assured.
A formal case FIR No 11 of 2024 under relevant sections Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Zadibal police station in this regard and the police team tasked to investigate the case was directed to check the CCTV footage in the area and record statements of the witnesses present at the time of incident.
Following assurances by the police, the protesters later dispersed off peacefully and the traffic movement was restored in the area.
