Srinagar- The Eid ul Fitr will be celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday as the Shawwal moon was sighted in the region, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramazan.
Kashmir Grand Mufti, Nasir-ul-Islam late on Tuesday announced that evidence of moon sightings were received by him from different parts of Kashmir.
He said that the consultative committee headed by him (Grand Mufti) with members Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Moulana Rehmatullah Qasimi, Moulana Abdul Lateef Alqindi, Ghulam Rasool Hami and ulema from Jammu and Chenab valley have concluded that Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on Wednesday.
Mufti’s message followed a late night announcement by the Pakistan Ruet-e-Hilal Committee declaring Shawwal moon has been sighted and Wednesday was Eid-al-Fitr.
In New Delhi Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari announced that the Shawwal moon had not been sighted. Therefore, Thursday, April 11, will be the Eid-ul-Fitr in India.
Interestingly this year Kashmir is celebrating Eid together with the Muslims in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, Iran, US, United Kingdom and other countries in the Middle East and the West.
Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, marking the culmination of month-long Ramazan when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.
Eid ul Fitr is also known as a festival of charity and gratitude that brings deep spiritual awakening for its followers.
One of the five pillars of Islam is Zakat that means charity and on this day followers believe in giving money, food, clothes and other items of necessity to the poor. In fact, many Muslims give Zakat before offering Eid prayers.
With a devastating war on Gaza which has left over thirty thousand Palestinian men women and children dead amid rising fears of famine-like situation it is expected that Eid celebrations will be low-key.
Meanwhile Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has exhorted Muslims to celebrate Eid with solemnity.
“We are celebrating today’s Eid while we are facing various challenges and problems at the social, societal and religious levels. As a Muslim Ummah, we are facing many problems locally as well as on the global level,” Mirwaiz said.
By the grace and mercy of Allah Almighty, all of us have been blessed with an opportunity for worship, fasting, purification of the soul and improvement of our conduct during the blessed month of fasting. Let us strive to maintain this spiritual atmosphere and disposition in the future as well, he added.
“On this occasion of Eid, as a servant of Islam and an advocate of humanity, I urge the entire community to focus not only on the rights of Allah but also on the significant religious obligations related to the rights of fellow human beings. As we strive to fulfill our personal responsibilities, it is also incumbent upon us, as part of our religious duties, to assist and cooperate with all those members of society who are deserving of our attention and support.”
