Srinagar- One person lost his life while four residential houses were damaged in a devastating blaze that broke out at Jamallatta Nawakadal area in the old city here this evening.
Four residential structures comprising around 15 members lost their shelters in a massive blaze near Yarbal Masjid, a mosque situated along the banks of River Jhelum near Nawakadal Bridge, witnesses told Kashmir Observer.
The fire, officials claimed, broke out in the resident house of one Bashir Ahmad Banday son of Mohammad Yusuf Banday, and quickly spread to three nearby structures.
Banday, according to the witnesses, was trapped inside his house before his dead body was retrieved from under the debris. Matoo, they said, died of possible suffocation.
Property worth crores was destroyed in the fire incident, while firefighting operation was on when reports last came in. Officials said fire tenders from several stations were rushed to the spot to douse off the flames as soon as the information regarding the incident was received.
Officials said that a number of persons including some females who had been trapped inside their homes were successfully rescued by a team of Fire and Emergency Department.
They said the cause of fire could not be ascertained as the men and machinery were busy dousing off the flames that destroyed four residential houses in the congested locality.
The four other houses that suffered damage in the incident belong to Bashir Ahmad Matoo, Noor Mohammad Matoo and Mohammad Sayeed.
A senior official of Fire and Emergency Department told Kashmir Observer that police has taken cognizance of the incident and investigation to ascertain the cause of fire taken up.
Srinagar Admin Reaches Out To Hawal Fire Victims
On the directions of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, a team of District Administration, Srinagar today visited Hawal area in Eidgah Tehsil of the District where four residential houses were engulfed in a fire incident here on Wednesday evening.
The team assessed the damages caused due to the fire incident and expressed sympathy with the affected families on loss of property.
On the occasion, an immediate assistance in the form of blankets, mattresses, bed sheets and kitchen sets, besides some funds were provided to the fire affected families as an interim relief out of the District Red Cross Fund.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar has appealed to the general public to follow all precautionary measures while using electric/electronic gadgets, LPG cylinders and other appliances being used for heating and cooking purposes to avoid such fire incidents.
He stated that people often leave their gadgets unattended, which leads to many of these fire incidents.
