Srinagar– Noted Kashmiri poet and broadcaster, Farooq Nazki, passed away at the age of 83 on Tuesday.
A former Director of Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) Srinagar, Nazki was celebrated for his significant contributions to Kashmiri literature and romantic poetry. His career began as a broadcaster and writer for Radio Kashmir, following in the footsteps of his father, the renowned Kashmiri poet Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazki.
Throughout his lifetime, Nazki received numerous awards, including the Sahitya Academy Award in 1995 for his poetry collection, “Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas“.
Despite facing health challenges in recent years, including lung and kidney complications, he continued to make meaningful contributions to the literary and media landscape of Kashmir.
Nazki served in key positions such as the Director of Radio Kashmir and Director of Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar.
Known for his wit, humor, and eloquent use of words, Nazki left an indelible mark on Kashmiri literature. He retired in 2000 as the Deputy Director General of Doordarshan and served as a media advisor to Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.
Nazki passed away at a hospital in Katra after suffering a heart attack, following a four-year battle with health issues. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son, who is a medical doctor. The funeral prayer (Nimaz-e-Jinazah) will be held in Srinagar on Wednesday morning, family sources said.
Nazki’s death was meanwhile being widely mourned.

For he has left this station after enriching it in many ways. A societal loss which is a personal bereavement. RIP Mir Mohammed Farooq Nazki (1940 – 2024).”
