A light snowfall in the higher reaches in recent days, has brought a drawn dry season to an end, even though plains have yet to experience the touch of white flakes this winter. Traditionally, the onset of the first snowfall marks a significant cultural moment for Kashmiris. Known as ‘Nov Sheen’ or New Snowfall, this event prompts joyous greetings and the exchange of winter delicacies among friends and family. But it seems the snow is going to elude the plains for some more time.
As the 40-day-long period of intense winter cold, known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ draws to a close, the absence of snowfall in the plains has left locals yearning for the signature winter charm. The minimum temperatures in Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam have seen a noticeable rise, casting doubt on the possibility of a heavy snowfall in the remaining days of winter.
Nonetheless, the snow in the high altitude areas is a pleasant change in weather. Doodhpathri resort in Budgam witnessed a delicate covering of 2 inches, while Ganderbal received 4 inches of snow. The beauty of Sonamarg has been enhanced by a generous 1-foot snowfall, with Razdan Top receiving an impressive 2 feet. Dawar Gurez, Izmarg, Sadna Top, and Farkin Top are all touched by varying degrees of snow, creating a winter wonderland.
While the winter and the attendant snowfall create may hardships for people in the Valley, on the tourism front, things start looking up. In the famous health resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, the snow draws tourists in droves. Snowfall is thus a boon for tourism. It is important for its novelty for the ninety-nine percent of more than 1.4 Indians, so they look forward to visiting Kashmir in winter. The recent snowfall has not only delighted tourists but has also brought a renewed sense of hope for the local players in the industry, who were grappling with a slump in business in the absence of substantial snowfall in the preceding months. The valley, known for its enchanting beauty, particularly during winters, faced a decline in tourist footfall, leading to cancellations and a lack of queries for tour operators.
The arrival of snow in the Kashmir Valley is not just a meteorological event; it is a cultural and emotional embrace that adds a touch of magic to the winter season. The anticipation of ‘Nav Sheen’ continues to linger in the air, as the people of Kashmir await the full manifestation of winter’s grace upon their land. Here’s hoping it snows more in the near future.
