SRINAGAR– In a historic moment, 16-year-old para archer Sheetal Devi was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award by President Droupadi Murmu on January 9. Born with phocomelia, a rare congenital disorder resulting in underdeveloped limbs, Sheetal defied the odds to become the first international para archery champion without upper limbs.
Her accolades include three gold medals and one silver medal achieved at the 4th Para Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, in 2023. Additionally, she secured a silver medal in the World Para Archery Championship held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, also in 2023.
Her journey from the humble hamlet of Lohi Dhar, Block Mughal Maidan in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, to the pinnacle of success is a testament to her indomitable spirit.
Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Sheetal, born on January 10, 2007, exhibited athletic prowess from a young age. Climbing trees laid the foundation for her strong upper body, a crucial asset in her future archery endeavors.
Drawing inspiration from Matt Stutzman, who achieved silver at the London 2012 Paralympics using his legs, Sheetal’s coaches tailored a unique approach, enabling her to master the art of para archery.
Following the announcement of awards, LG Manoj Sinha greeted her in his post on X and described it as a proud moment for J&K.
District Administration Kishtwar visited Sheetal Devi’s home on Wednesday, extending heartfelt felicitations for her outstanding achievements in a simple yet heartfelt ceremony.
