Srinagar- The capital city of Srinagar has surpassed other nine districts of Kashmir Valley in reported cases of crime against the women, including domestic violence by husband and in-laws besides abduction, a report released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has revealed.
According to the report , a copy of which lies with Kashmir Observer, the UT has recorded a total 3,716 registered cases of crimes against women, including cases under section 498 (cruelty by husband or his relatives) of the IPC and IPC’s section 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid).
The report, however, suggests that the valley takes the lead in many cases including cruelty by husbands, kidnapping and abduction and acid attacks as compared to Jammu.
The NCRB data reveals that there were 500 instances of cruelty by husbands and their relatives towards women in J&K. Srinagar topped with 70 such cases, followed by Jammu with 60, Rajouri 58, Kupwara 38, Poonch 25, Doda 49, seven each from Anantnag and Awantipora, 11 each from Bandipora, Handwara, and Ramban, 24 from Baramulla, 17 from Budgam, 23 from Ganderbal, 13 from Kathua, and six from Kishtwar.
The Valley also witnessed two acid attacks on women, while no case was reported from Jammu in the year 2022.
The NCRB report disclosed 886 cases of kidnapping and abduction of women throughout Jammu and Kashmir in 2022. Out of these, the valley witnessed 384 cases while rest were reported from Jammu. Among these cases, 118 were reported from Jammu, 109 from Srinagar. Budgam reported 63 cases, Rajouri 53, while Kulgam and Kupwara each recorded 41 cases, according to the NCRB report.
In 2022, there were 287 reported cases of rape. Among these, 57 were reported in Jammu, 34 in Rajouri, 19 in Anantnag, 15 in Kathua, 12 each in Doda and Srinagar, 10 in Baramulla, and 14 in Bandipora. The report indicated that in 276 cases, the offenders were acquainted with the victims.
The overall statistics reveal that Srinagar district leads with 446 reported crimes against women in 2022, followed by Jammu with 431 cases, and Rajouri ranking third with 306 cases. Kulgam recorded 200 crimes against women in 2022, while Udhampur district documented 145 crimes during the year.
Despite a slight decrease from 3937 cases in 2021, Jammu and Kashmir reported 3716 crimes against women in 2022, marking a notable increase from 3405 cases recorded in 2020.
In 2020, the report revealed that there were nine cases of dowry deaths, 243 rape cases with 247 victims, including three girls, 349 cases of cruelty against women by their husbands or relatives, as many as 1,639 cases of assault on women and 1,744 cases of assault on women with the intention to outrage their modesty.
Notably, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has reiterated that his government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance for crime against women and is committed to punish the criminal networks or individuals behind human trafficking.
According to the NCRB report, J&K has registered nine cases under section 304B (dowry deaths) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in 2022. Additionally, 42 cases under section 305 (abetment of suicide of child or insane person) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC were also registered in the erstwhile state which was downgraded into a Union Territory in August 2019.
According to the report, in 2022, J&K reported a total of 886 cases of kidnapping and abduction under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 364 (kidnapping/abduction with the intent of murder) of the IPC.
J&K has registered 287 cases under section 376 IPC (rape) and all the victims are adults. Besides, 11 cases have been registered under section 511 (attempt to commit rape) of IPC while 1606 cases have been registered under section 354 (assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC in the UT last year.
The UT registered 17 cases under Dowry Prohibition Act 1961, 27 cases of Information Technology/Cyber Crimes (women centric) and 303 cases under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (girl child) at various police stations during 2022, the report noted.
The report also painted a grim picture of disposal of cases of crimes against women with over 1929 cases pending investigation from 5667 total cases recorded the previous year.
