Srinagar- A portion of land at Zoonimar locality in Nowshehra area of Srinagar suddenly caved in, forcing about ten members of three families to flee from their houses, which had been sealed by the authorities last evening.
Officials of the district administration said the families were safely evacuated while the residential structures numbering three were immediately sealed, following sudden caving in of a portion of land at Zoonimar locality due to the sewer leakage.
“Three residential structures were sealed while about ten members of three families were rescued after a portion of land that also created a sink hole near a plinth area of one of the affected structures at Zoonimar locality last evening,” officials told Kashmir Observer.
They said the houses had to be sealed in order to prevent fatalities due to the abrupt settling of the earth. However no loss of life or injury was reported in the incident.
The abrupt caving in of a portion of land created chaos in the area, prompting the authorities to evacuate the families to the safer locations within the vicinity.
A joint team of SDRF, police and district administration reached the spot as soon as the information about the incident was received.
“The caving in of land has created a sink hole near the plinth area of one of the houses besides deep ruts in all three structures. We are constantly monitoring the situation and appeal to the people not to panic at all,” officials said, adding the road leading to the affected area has been sealed
The incident, officials said took place around 4pm on Tuesday, prompting the families to flee from their homes in a helter-skelter manner.
