Srinagar- Six Kashmiri labourers were killed and as many sustained injuries when the vehicle they were travelling fell into a gorge near Sunni in Shimla district on Monday morning, police said.
The mishap took place at Kudharghat, about 35 km from Shimla, when the driver of the ill-fated pickup truck lost control of the vehicle, police said.
Of the 12 occupants, nine were from Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, working as labourers in Himachal Pradesh. They were on their way to Mandi from Sunni, police said.
Three of the labourers died on the spot and as many were declared dead by doctors when they were taken to a hospital, police said.
Those injured are undergoing treatment at the Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital (IGMCH), police said.
The deceased have been identified as Fareed Ahmad Deedar, (24), Gulam Hussain Gorsi (43), Shabir Ahmad Deedar, (19), Talib Hussain Tinda (23), Gulzar Ahmad Deedar (30), and Mushtaq Ahmad Dedar (30)—all residents of Kulgam.
The injured included Ranjit, who was driving the vehicle, Manzoor Ahmed and Talib Hussain, both from Kulgam and Aslam Deeded from Anantnag, besides Akash Kumar, Ajay Thakur.
A case has been registered and investigations are on, Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi told PTI.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat said that the district administration is in touch with Shimla Administration for transportation of last remains of all the deceased to their native villages.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and several mainstream politicians have expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic road accident.
“Anguished by the tragic road accident in Shimla, in which six Kulgam residents have lost their lives. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Directed DC Kulgam to provide all necessary assistance to the next of kin of each deceased,” LG Sinha posted on X, previously known as Twitter.
The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) also expressed deep sorrow over the death of Kashmiri labourers in road accident and urged the authorities to extend all possible help to injured and compensation to the victim families.
“JKNC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah and VP @OmarAbdullah express deep sorrow over the tragic accident in Shimla claiming the lives of 6 individuals. They urge the authorities to extend all possible assistance to the injured and ensure fair compensation for the affected families. Additionally, they extend wishes for a swift recovery to the injured and offer strength to those grieving the loss of their loved ones,” NC posted on X.
Expressing shock and grief over the deaths of Kashmiri labourers, CPI (M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami demanded adequate compensation to the victim families and free of cost treatment to the injured.
Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party leader Altaf Bukhari also consoled the demise of labourers.
“Pained over the tragic death of six persons from Kulgam district and injuries to as many in a road mishap in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla. Extend my heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved families and pray for a swift recovery of the injured persons,” he said on X.
“I in the meantime urge the authorities to ensure best possible treatment for the persons injured in the incident,” Bukhari posted on X.
