Srinagar- In a remarkable tale of resilience and determination, Muhammad Nauman, the eldest son of a Srinagar-based family, has overcome the challenges of hearing deficiency through a groundbreaking cochlear implant surgery.
Born unable to speak or hear, Nauman’s family embarked on a relentless quest to find a solution.
Muhammad Nauman’s father recalls the arduous journey, “We tried everything to address his hearing deficiency, consulting renowned specialists at AIIMS Delhi, Chandigarh Hospital, and Ganga Ram Hospital. Despite numerous tests and prescribed medications, success eluded us.”
Faced with limited options, the family turned to cochlear implant surgery, a relatively unfamiliar concept for them.
In 2019, after extensive research and consultations with Dr. Rafiq Pampori, a distinguished ENT specialist, the family decided to proceed with the cochlear implant.
Nauman, then five years old, underwent the surgery in February 2020 at a private hospital. The surgery led by Dr. Pampori and his team marked a turning point in Nauman’s life.
However, the triumph was not without challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic posed additional hurdles, disrupting the scheduled speech therapies crucial for Nauman’s recovery. Undeterred, the family adhered to safety guidelines and sought therapies at SMHS, ensuring that Nauman’s progress was not compromised.
Reflecting on the significance of the cochlear implant, Nauman’s father emphasizes, “This surgery was not a small endeavor. We undertook it with the hope that Nauman would gain the ability to speak and listen effectively.” Post-surgery, intensive speech therapies became paramount to develop Nauman’s vocabulary and communication skills.
The family’s dedication and Nauman’s perseverance bore fruit, leading to a successful integration into the mainstream education system.
Nauman enrolled in Legends School of Education, Kanitar, where the management extended unwavering support. Overcoming the odds, Nauman now excels in Class 1st, even caring for his younger brother, Muhammad Adnan, in the same school.
Nauman’s daily routine involves meticulous care for his cochlear implant, requiring eight hours for cleaning and four hours for charging. His parents express gratitude for the school’s understanding and cooperation, ensuring Nauman’s participation in various activities and camps.
The journey has been emotional, with Nauman’s first word echoing a poignant moment. “When he heard his first word, he started crying, and so did we,” recalls Nauman’s father.
Dr. Pampori’s prediction held true – the activation of the cochlear implant was akin to a new birth for Nauman, enabling him to experience the world of sounds.
As time progresses, Nauman continues to conquer new milestones. From grasping concepts of colors to actively participating in various activities, he has defied expectations. Despite a modified curriculum, Nauman tackles studies with vigor, excelling in writing and mathematics. Islamic studies, too, hold a significant place in his academic journey.
Muhammad Nauman’s story is a testament to the transformative power of medical innovation and familial support. His triumph over silence serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
