SRINAGAR- J&K beat Punjab on Wednesday to lift the 3rd Balramji Das Tandon U-16 Multi-Day Cricket Tournament.
Playing at DAV College Cricket Ground in Chandigarh, J&K won the toss and opted to field first in the final. Punjab batters showed grit but failed to maintain any meaningful partnership as they were bowled out for 256 in 83.5 overs. Yamuna Singh top scored for Punjab with 88 (128), while Ravtej Singh scored 47 (113). For J&K, Mohd Shefan Abbas, Arun Kumar and captain Manitvya Sharma took two wickets each. Irfan Ashraf, Saksham, Jeevesh Gupta and Shourya Chouhan took a wicket each.
With the total in sight, the J&K youngsters needed to take a first innings lead to win the tournament.
However, the J&K top order fumbled as the team slid to 99-4 at one point in the game. Middle-order batter Shourya Chouhan 91 (150) led from the front and was ably supported by Manitvya Sharma 48 (112) to lead J&K close to surpassing Punjab’s total. At the end of the day’s play, J&K were 284-8 after 82.1 overs. The first innings lead meant the Under-16 boys had won the tournament for the first time. Zaid Mufti 38 (47), Shiva 28 (72), Mohd Shefan Abbas 25 (36) and Rahil 23 (31) were the other contributors for the team. For Punjab, Akash Singh and Yuvraj Arora took two wickets each. Shourya Chouhan was awarded man of the match.
