Srinagar- The outgoing Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh on Monday asked policemen to exercise extreme caution and not take their lives for granted amidst the ‘persistent threat’.
The UT police chief said preserving peace is far more challenging than reestablishing it and the J&K police are equipped and are always ready to handle any situation that comes their way.
“We have to be very cautious as threats are still around. We cannot take our lives so lightly, so we have to be very careful and I pray the injured officer recover soon,” DGP said while talking to the media after launching 163 state-of-art vehicles for 43 police stations under Operation Capacity Building (OCB) at Zewan area on the city outskirts.
Singh was referring to the police officer Masroor Ahmad who was shot and injured by terrorists at Eidgah area of Srinagar last evening.
“I am confident that our police officers, with their training, quantity and high morale, can handle any situation that comes their way. We are capable in every aspect,” he added.
When asked that he is leaving the police force soon, the DGP replied “see I am not leaving the force but I am with the force and I will always be with the force. A policeman is always a policeman and I have been so for thirty seven years now, and I will always remain a policeman”
Regarding the officer, who was shot and injured by terrorists in the Eidgah area of the old city last evening, DGP said “he had gone out to have fun with the people, he was playing cricket in a ground with a team of officers when was shot. He is injured and is recovering. He is in the hospital”
Replying to a media query on ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the Arnia sector recently, Singh said the police are in process of confirming as to how and why violation took place on the LoC.
“I can’t speculate about elections or no elections. They have always been disturbing peace here and want militancy to continue. But our brave J&K police force along with the support of other forces, including the army and to a very big extent with the support of the people have been able to diminish that kind of designs and ill intended actions by our adversary. Of course, people would be alert to take care of any regional challenges ahead of elections,” he replied.
“See as of now I see it as an aberration. Our people are trying to find out the causes as to why it happened and they are still in process of confirming and verifying the facts and I will not be able to comment beyond this,” DGP added.
He was, however, quick to add that ceasefire understanding has brought a lot of respite to the people living on both sides of the LoC.
“I think this kind of understanding must continue. We will find out as to why and how it happened. I’m sure the better understanding would prevail”
Regarding his recent visit to the Keran and Kupwara, Singh said the arrangements on the LoC and IB are both in place.
“When I visited Keran, our troops deployed there had a very high morale and they were covering every inch of our land. The day I went, we had an encounter in Machil wherein five terrorists were killed. Most of the encounters this year took place on the LoC as they have tried to push more numbers of terrorists this side but people this side were very alert and prepared and fully aware of the designs of our adversary and they have been able to take care of the ill designs and neutralize most of them infiltrating from the IB and LoC both,” he said.
