Srinagar- Authorities yet again disallowed congregational prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar on Friday, while Imambargah Ayatullah Yusuf (RA) at Khomeini Chowk, Bemina was locked as a security measure to prevent pro-Palestinian protests.
Several religious leaders including chief cleric of Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and prominent Shia leader and President Anjuman Sharei Shian, Agha Syed Hadi Moosavi were placed under house arrest.
Anjuman-i-Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar in a statement said that Friday congregational prayers were disallowed at Jamia Masjid for the second consecutive week as the police locked all the gates of the grand mosque this morning.
A spokesman of the Anjuman-i-Auqaf said Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, who was allowed to offer prayers and deliver Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid after four years, was yet again barred from performing his religious duties.
“Mirwaiz continues to be under house detention since 15th of this month and is not allowed to move out. Mirwaiz deeply regretted the repeated targeting of Jamia Masjid Srinagar by closing it to the Muslims on Fridays and disallowing them from offering obligatory Friday prayers,” the spokesman added.
Meanwhile, the authorities locked the main gate of Imambargah Ayatullah Yusuf (RA) at Khomeini Chowk, Bemina, informing its caretakers that congregational Friday prayers will not be allowed at the major congregation hall.
Authorities also placed President Anjuman Sharie Shian, Agha Syed Hadi Moosavi under house detention.
Meanwhile security was stepped up around major mosques across Kashmir including Srinagar amidst fears of pro-Palestinian protests by the people post Friday prayers.
A pose of police and paramilitary CRPF was deployed around Jamia Masjid in Srinagar as a security measure to prevent protests, which officials said might upset the peaceful atmosphere in the valley.
Security forces were also deployed around Imambargah in Budgam district of central Kashmir to prevent pro-Palestinian protest post Friday Prayers.
