Meet Firdousa Akhter, a physically challenged artisan from Lolipora village of Beerwah Tehsil of central Kashmir’s district Budgam.
Akhter has been doing Jamawar (Sozni) Pashmina work for over 12 years and earning livelihood for her family. Akhter’s two elder brothers are visually impaired. Her father is a baker. Akhter urged the government’s handicraft department to provide her assistance and help her expand her work.
“I have learned this craft from one of my brothers. It is difficult to continue this without any assistance from the concerned department. I don’t even possess an artisan card despite visiting the tehsil office many times for the same. There is a great need to handhold artisans like us if this art has to survive,” she said.
