SRINAGAR– J&K lost 2-1 to Gujarat in their Santosh Trophy opening match at SAG Benaulim Football Ground in in Benaulim, Goa. The team is placed in Group A in the 77th Senior National Championship.
Coached by Zahid Shafi Mir, the J&K team fell behind in the 41st minute after Gujarat winger Chunsaba Bariam found the back of the net.
J&K was reduced to 10 men in the early morning game, when midfielder Shahmeer Tariq was shown a straight red in the 62nd minute.
Gujarat doubled their lead ten minutes later, as Seigoumang Thangminlen Doungle made it 2-0. J&K midfielder Adnan Ayub gave his side a fighting chance by reducing the deficit in the 81st minute. However, Gujarat held on and won the game 2-1.
J&K next play Chhattisgarh on October 11 at the same ground. The game kicks off at 4:00 PM.
