It is a welcome decision but we should only be truly happy when we see this getting implemented in an election and that seems at least a few years away as of now. Because many challenging modalities need to be worked out , first census and then delimitation exercise and then it will be women’s reservation to see the light of the day. Both these are massive exercises and have a political angle to it. And then we are already seeing the demand of reservation within the reservation, so what kind of final shape it takes will be keenly watched. But the most critical thing is that this reservation should not turn out to be a proxy for women candidates for political husbands or fathers and sadly these women representatives turn out to be mere rubber stamps and it leads to the increase in dynastic politics. We see that happening at local panchayat and village pradhan elections. So whenever this is implemented it should be done to really empower women and give them true wings to fly and allow them to make a significant difference to society.
