Srinagar- A Jammu-based businessman and educationist has purchased a plot of land on the moon, days after India’s Chandrayaan-3 successfully soft-landed near the Moon’s south pole on August 23.
Rupesh Masson, 49, who is also the regional director of UCMAS for Jammu and Kashmir and Leh, shared the details of his land property on moon with the reporters.
He said that he bought land at “Luna Earth’s Moon, Tract 55-Parcel 10772 known as Lacus Felicitatis (Lake of Happiness).”
Masson said he bought it from The Lunar Registry in New York City, which was certified on August 25.
“I am happy and also confused at the same time whether if I bought the land or not,”Masson told reporters.
He further said that he and his family were very happy like other countrymen about the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon and that’s the reason he purchased the land just for fun.
“I purchased one acre of land and the papers are here. I paid the fee,” Masson added. The current rate of the plot on this location on the moon is ₹2,405 per acre ($29.07/acre), as shown on the website. There are other locations on the moon, like Sea of Rains, Bay of Rainbows, etc.
The International Lunar Lands Registry (ILLR) was created in 1999 to provide a standardized and simplified system for registering claims to real property on the moon.
Notably, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and late actor Sushant Singh Rajput also own a piece of land on the Moon.
Masson is hopeful that he will be able to have a trip on the moon to see his land. He said that the Moon represents a symbol of hope for the future and could also serve as a psychological escape hatch for humans facing the challenges of climate change.
