SRINAGAR- One of Valley’s promising football clubs, Downtown Heroes FC, have found it hard to get going in the 132nd Edition of Durand Cup.
Up against Indian Super League team FC Goa, the Heroes proved no match to a superior side Wednesday, suffering a 3-0 defeat at SAI Stadium in Guwahati, Assam.
Head coach Hilal Rasool Parray had named a starting XI full of local talent, but the Downtown, Srinagar-based club failed to make the most out of the outing.
Muhammed Nemil gave FC Goa the lead in 18th minute, shooting from inside the penalty area. He then put the cross into the box for Carlos Martinez to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute. After not conceding for most of the second half, the Downtown Heroes were caught by surprise as Devendra Murgaokar found himself in the penalty area in the 97th minute to make it 3-0 to Goa.
The loss was the Heroes’ second consecutive defeat in the prestigious competition, all but ensuring their exit. They earlier lost 2-1 to Shillong Lajong FC.
Downtown Heroes will next play their final game of the 2023 Durand Cup on Sunday, August 20, against Northeast United FC. The match will be played at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, with kick off at 2:30 PM.
Durand Cup can be watched live on Sony Sports 2 and Sony LIV.
