Srinagar- Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta said on Monday that Srinagar has emerged as a lively city following the successful G20 meeting held in May this year.
He also said that Srinagar will soon have a Srinagar Plaza on the pattern of Jammu’s Town Square Mall and that the people will enjoy a vibrant nightlife with shops open until midnight at newly renovated Lal Chowk in the near future.
Addressing a gathering on the inaugural function of iconic Ghanta Ghar (Clock-Tower) here this evening, the Chief Secretary said the administration will ensure a public transport system in the area, which he said will help boost business in the city center.
“First of all I would like to congratulate people on the successful and timely completion of this project. I feel an honor to tell you that the city will have Srinagar Plaza modeled after Jammu’s Town Square Mall soon and I wish shops remain open till midnight in Lal Chowk and people enjoy the thriving nightlife,” he added.
He said the Lal Chowk, which he said was one of key components of Srinagar Smart City Project will lose its essence if shops won’t remain open until midnight.
“What’s the fun if the shops at Lal Chowk won’t remain open until midnight? Area will soon have access to public transport, and that live music performances and concerts every evening will enhance the grandeur of the historic market place,” said the Chief Secretary.
He said the project was completed due to the uphill effort of the Lieutenant Governor together with the support of the people and other allied departments.
Mehta said all the departments including SMC, R&B and police have equally contributed in the city’s development and deserve all praises and appreciation for the wonderful job.
The Chief Secretary said there were no flyovers in Srinagar till 2019, while the mesmerizing evenings of world famous Dal Lake were missing.
“Srinagar has emerged as a lively and vibrant city after hosting the G20 meeting and this is just a beginning; we will take Srinagar to the next level of development that no one thought about. Srinagar city will emerge as one of the top cities with all new Lal Chowk and Jhelum riverfront in place,” he added.
