SRINAGAR- Prof P N Khosa, a renowned physicist of global repute, known for his research on low latitude whistlers, solar atmosphere, and Jupiter’s magnetosphere, passed away peacefully at his New Delhi residence on July 29, 2023.
The scientific community of the country is deeply affected by the news of his passing, as the octogenarian professor’s exceptional work in the field of Physics has a lasting impact on the world of science.
Prof Khosa made significant contributions to the field of physics, particularly in the study of low latitude whistlers, which are electromagnetic waves produced by lightning. Additionally, his research extended to exploring the solar atmosphere and Jupiter’s magnetosphere.
In 1986, he published significant papers on the energy loss of electrons in the solar atmosphere, taking into account many-body interactions.
NIT Srinagar, under the leadership of its director, Prof Sudhakar Yedla, organized a condolence meeting to pay tribute to the departed soul. The attendees described Prof Khosa’s demise as a colossal loss to the world of Physics. The gathering observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for the departed professor.
Fondly remembered for his unique teaching style and a great sense of humour, participants shared cherished memories they had with Prof Khosa. One participant fondly recalled how he used to engage his classes in NIT’s dining hall during evening hours, making learning a delightful experience for his students.
Prof Khosa’s legacy is characterized by qualities of righteousness, integrity, dedication, and nobleness, which shall continue to rank him high among the eminent scholars of the country.
For nearly a decade, he served as the Head of the Department of Physics at REC Srinagar, and his immense contributions left an indelible mark on both the department and the institution.
Recognizing his meritorious services to science and society, the authorities have decided to host an annual lecture series entitled “Prof Khosa Memorial Lecture” on July 31st. The series will attempt to highlight the prominent role of eminent scholars in the field of Physics and allied disciplines and will be open to students from other institutions in and around Srinagar City.
Prof M A Shah, the current Head of the Department of Physics at NIT Srinagar, fondly described Prof Khosa as a cheerful individual whose presence on the campus radiated positive energy while paying his respects to the departed academician.
The passing of Prof P N Khosa, he said, has left a profound void in the scientific community, but his contributions and impact on the world of Physics will forever be remembered and cherished.
