Srinagar- In a startling revelation former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said he too wanted to allow the Muharram procession during his tenure, but “some amongst us” opposed it. He however refused to name anyone saying “some among them are no more.”
Dr Farooq refused to give credit to LG administration for lifting the ban on 8th Muharram procession and accused it of having an ulterior motive. “Why now, why not all these years?” he questioned.
Dr Farooq was responding to a question about the LG administration’s decision to allow the 8th Muharram procession after more than three decades.
When a reporter persisted with his question of why he as chief minister failed to lift the ban during his tenure, he said “We also wanted Muharram processions during our tenure, but there were ‘some people within us’ who opposed that. When asked to reveal their identity, Abdullah said: ”I don’t want to name anyone as some of them are no more in this world.”
The Member Parliament from Srinagar was at Zadibal where he participated in the Ashura procession soon after LG Manoj Sinha had left.
The NC president said he himself has been part of Muharram processions. “Everyone – Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs – have always welcomed it,” he said.
He added, “Thanks to Allah, this has started, but the Zuljanah has not been taken from Abi Guzar, and by the will of Allah when there will be (our) government, Zuljanah will be taken from there.”
