Srinagar- Police on Tuesday arrested two alleged extortionists from Baramulla district of North Kashmir.
Mudasir Ahmad Wani of Sangri and Yasir Rashid Rather of Malpora Sheeri were arrested by police on the basis of a written complaint filed by Faisal Bashir of Kanli Bagh alleging that the duo, claiming to be affiliated with a political party, approached his family to get his father Bashir Ahmad Saleh released from the custody against a cash payment of Rs 1 lakh, a police spokesperson said Tuesday.
Saleh, he said, was detained under PSA from 2022.
The spokesperson said that due to the poor financial condition, the family was unable to meet the monetary demand made by the accused.
“Meanwhile, father of the applicant got released after quash of PSA, and both the accused persons again approached them for the money. However, the family denied to pay anything and told them that they couldn’t pay anything to them,” he said.
However, the spokesperson said that both the accused forced the family to pay repeatedly and visited their home, and even called on phone a number of times and warned that if they will not pay the amount, they will face serious repercussions and will get the family head re-detained.
The complainant, he said, somehow managed Rs 10 thousand and gave them just to keep his father unharmed. However, both the accused further gave him a deadline to pay entire amount of Rs.1 lakh.
“Accordingly, a case FIR No. 134/2023 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Baramulla,” the spokesperson said.
Upon receiving the complaint, he said, Baramulla Police acted swiftly and investigated the matter.
As a result, he said, both the accused were apprehended and subsequently were arrested for their alleged involvement in extortion.
“SSP Baramulla Amod Ashok Nagpure-IPS in his message to the general public of Baramulla has advised them to reach him on mobile number 7051000999 in case any person demands bribe for any police related matter,” the spokesperson added.
