EID-ul-Azha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is a time for Muslims to reflect upon the spirit of sacrifice and seek divine blessings not only for themselves but for the entire Muslim ummah and humanity as a whole. According to religious tradition, the festival commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail, as commanded by Allah. However, as Prophet Ibrahim prepared to carry out the sacrifice, Allah provided a ram to be sacrificed instead, symbolizing the ultimate act of submission and devotion to the Creator.
While the festival is often associated with the act of sacrificing animals, its essence lies in the profound message of selflessness and devotion exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to submit wholeheartedly to Allah’s will and seek His pleasure.
The Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in his statement said that Eid is a festival of love and brotherhood that spreads the message of peace and tranquility. As has generally been the case over the last three years, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated peacefully with traditional fervor, a term we have grown fond of using on these occasions.
Thousands of animals are sacrificed on this Eid. People also spend generously on food items on the occasion. Parents prioritize buying new clothes, toys, and firecrackers for their children to ensure they have a joyous celebration. However, despite the bustling sacrificial animal markets and bakery outlets in Kashmir on the eve of Eid, the overall shopping atmosphere remained subdued this year
Amidst the festivities, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the plight of those in society who struggle to meet basic needs. While celebrating Eid, Muslims are encouraged to exercise austerity and redirect their financial resources towards helping the less fortunate. By donating the money that would have been spent on consumables to the welfare of widows and orphans, individuals can earn greater spiritual rewards and fulfill the true spirit of Eid-ul-Azha—a celebration of giving and sacrifice.
It is imperative for the Muslim community to reflect upon its failures and shortcomings. As Eid is celebrated, it is vital to remember the thousands of individuals affected by ongoing turmoil and contribute materially to alleviate their suffering. Eid presents a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need. By combining the joyous celebration of Eid with acts of charity and community support, Muslims can uphold the true essence of Eid-ul-Azha and embody the spirit of compassion and sacrifice.
